MBA in yachting industry

24 February 2016

The school of sea and flight crews Captain Polo offers a new educational form of effective programs including solution of specific objectives which each captain of a sailing or motor yacht can face. The courses are held with use of the MBA (Master of Business Administration)system. The abbreviation MBA stands not only for designation of a management degree but it also includes Case study type of teaching.

It is now documented that students can learn more effectively when actively involved in the learning process. The case study approach is one way in which such active learning strategies can be implemented. Case studies are defined as student centered activities based on topics that demonstrate theoretical concepts in an applied setting. This definition of a case study covers the variety of different teaching structures, ranging from short individual case studies to longer group-based activities.

In the marine industry the manager is the captain, the company the yacht, the external environment - sea spaces. The navigation case is the text containing a detailed description of a vessel, crew, position, conditions of floating, tasks or situations a captain may face.

A case also includes maps, schemes and tables of a navigation area and description of a situation in figures. At first students independently study all necessary theory, then analyze a situation and propose a solution, in the course of discussion with a skilled captain (school tutor) - summing up, decision-making and analysis of the results.

The Royal Yachting Association includes about 300 yachting schools. The association distributes various navigation exercises and training almanacs in Great Britain. Their teaching aids are the most popular and required in the world. Everybody has an opportunity to purchase them in the e-shop at their official web site. There is a certain shortage of such educational and methodical publications in Russia. Russian Yachting Association has been translating many exercises and training almanacs in Russian.

A new publication of Navigation exercises will be released this year. Each year thousands of yachtsmen and powerboaters learn navigation and seamanship by attending RYA courses. The shorebased courses cover a wide variety of subjects which are easier taught ashore before going afloat and putting them into practice. These navigation exercises have been written for students on RYA Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster courses who would like to hone their skills as they work through the course. They are also a useful reminder to experienced yachtsmen of the knowledge required to skipper a yacht safely. These RYA Navigation Exercises have been designed and written to help improve your seamanship and navigation skills. The questions become progressively harder, going from Dayskipper through to Yachtmaster Offshore level, as you work through each chapter. Everything you need to answer the questions will be found at the back of the book, including two RYA Training Charts.

The new handbook and navigation exercises editions will be presented at the stand of Captain Polo sailing school and the Russian Yachting Association (pavilion 3, Hall 13, Stand C490) at Moscow Boat Show

See you in the sea!
